The 2020-21 seen its first blockbuster trade. The Houston Rockets swapped Russell Westbrook for Washington’s John Wall in a trade of two former franchise players.
The Rockets also get a protected first-round pick.
The Rockets had been looking to move Westbrook since the beginning of the offseason and finally found a partner. The trade is a risk because Wall has not played in a season and a half due to a major knee injury. However, if Wall can return to his pre-injury self the Rockets will have another star to pair with James Harden.
Wall will be the 3rd-star point guard that the Rockets have tried to pair with Harden in the last 3 seasons. The Rockets first paired him with Chris Paul than traded Paul for Westbrook and now Westbrook for Wall. So far, only the Paul pairing has seen results. Four years ago the Rockets finished with the top record in the NBA and made it all the way to the Western Finals before falling to the Warriors in 7 games.
The Wizards meanwhile are trying to rebuild around Bradley Beal and adding Westbrook will help them do that. Both Beal and Westbrook are ball dominate scorers, but they should work together. The Wizards will need to add shooters around them though.
