Russell Westbrook\u2019s NBA career was never quiet. For 18 seasons, he played basketball with an intensity that could make an ordinary regular-season game in January feel like Game 7 of the NBA Finals. He attacked the rim with little concern for who was standing in his way, rebounded like a power forward, pushed the ball at extraordinary speed and accumulated triple-doubles at a rate that once seemed impossible in the modern NBA.<\/p>\n
Westbrook officially announced his retirement on August 12, 2026, ending one of the most statistically remarkable and polarizing careers in league history. He retired as the NBA’s career leader with 209 triple-doubles<\/strong>, while ranking fifth in league history with 10,351 assists<\/strong> and 14th with 27,176 points<\/strong>. He was a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection, two-time scoring champion, three-time assists leader and the 2016-17 NBA Most Valuable Player.<\/p>\n Yet numbers alone do not adequately explain Westbrook.<\/p>\n Few players have ever produced such radically different opinions. To his supporters, Westbrook represented everything a basketball player should be: fearless, relentless, loyal, emotional and unwilling to concede a possession. To his critics, his questionable shot selection, turnovers, inefficient shooting and difficulty adapting to smaller roles prevented his enormous talent from producing a championship.<\/p>\n Both perspectives became part of his legacy.<\/p>\n Westbrook was hardly viewed as a future NBA superstar when he arrived at UCLA. He developed dramatically during his two seasons with the Bruins and became known primarily for his athleticism and defensive ability.<\/p>\n The Seattle SuperSonics<\/a> selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft<\/a><\/strong>. Only days after the draft, the franchise’s relocation to Oklahoma City became official, making Westbrook part of the first generation of the Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a>.<\/p>\n It proved to be one of the most important draft selections in franchise history.<\/p>\n Westbrook joined Kevin Durant, who had been selected the previous year, and the Thunder added James Harden with the third pick in 2009. Serge Ibaka developed alongside them.<\/p>\n Suddenly Oklahoma City possessed one of the greatest collections of young talent in NBA history.<\/p>\n Westbrook developed quickly from an athletic young guard into an All-Star.<\/p>\n Oklahoma City won 50 games in 2009-10 and challenged the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. The Thunder reached the Western Conference Finals the following year before losing to the Dallas Mavericks.<\/p>\n Then came 2012.<\/p>\n Westbrook, Durant and Harden led Oklahoma City through the defending champion Mavericks, Kobe Bryant’s Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs to reach the 2012 NBA Finals<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Thunder appeared positioned to become the NBA’s next dynasty.<\/p>\n Instead, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh led the Miami Heat to the championship in five games.<\/p>\n Westbrook scored 43 points in Game 4<\/strong>, providing an early glimpse of the almost reckless competitive intensity that would define his career.<\/p>\n He was only 23.<\/p>\n At the time, another trip to the Finals seemed inevitable.<\/p>\n It never happened.<\/p>\n Oklahoma City traded Harden to Houston before the 2012-13 season after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension.<\/p>\n The decision changed NBA history.<\/p>\n Durant and Westbrook remained one of basketball’s best combinations, but injuries repeatedly interfered with Oklahoma City’s championship pursuit.<\/p>\n Westbrook tore the meniscus in his right knee during the first round of the 2013 playoffs after a collision with Patrick Beverley. The injury ended his season and essentially ended Oklahoma City’s championship chances.<\/p>\n Durant won MVP in 2014, and Oklahoma City returned to the Western Conference Finals before losing to San Antonio.<\/p>\n Westbrook continued improving.<\/p>\n By the middle of the decade, he was no longer merely Durant’s explosive sidekick. He was one of the best players in basketball.<\/p>\n Westbrook won his first scoring championship<\/a> in 2014-15, averaging 28.1 points per game<\/strong>.<\/p>\n His style was unmistakable.<\/p>\n Westbrook did not glide through defenses. He attacked them.<\/p>\n A defensive rebound could become a dunk at the opposite end within seconds. He routinely challenged centers at the rim despite standing only 6-foot-3. He played with an aggression rarely associated with point guards.<\/p>\n He also became increasingly productive as a passer and rebounder.<\/p>\n The triple-double gradually became his signature.<\/p>\n The 2015-16 Thunder offered Westbrook and Durant their best chance to return to the Finals.<\/p>\n Oklahoma City defeated a 67-win San Antonio Spurs team in the second round and then took a 3-1 Western Conference Finals lead over the 73-win Golden State Warriors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Thunder needed one more victory.<\/p>\n They never got it.<\/p>\n Golden State won three consecutive games, including Game 6 in Oklahoma City, when Klay Thompson produced one of the greatest playoff shooting performances ever.<\/p>\n The Warriors advanced to the Finals.<\/p>\n Durant subsequently left Oklahoma City and joined Golden State.<\/p>\n Westbrook was suddenly alone.<\/p>\n Everything about Westbrook’s career changed in 2016-17.<\/p>\n Rather than requesting a trade following Durant’s departure, Westbrook signed an extension and became the unquestioned face of the Thunder.<\/p>\n What followed was one of the most extraordinary individual seasons in NBA history.<\/p>\n Westbrook averaged:<\/p>\n 31.6 points He became the first player since Oscar Robertson in 1961-62 to average a triple-double for an entire season.<\/p>\n Westbrook also recorded 42 triple-doubles<\/strong>, breaking Robertson’s previous single-season record of 41.<\/p>\n It was not merely statistical accumulation.<\/p>\n Westbrook repeatedly delivered dramatic performances in close games while carrying an Oklahoma City roster that had lost Durant without receiving players in return.<\/p>\n The defining performance came on April 9, 2017, against Denver.<\/p>\n Westbrook recorded 50 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists<\/strong>, breaking Robertson’s triple-double record and then hitting a long game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer.<\/p>\n He was named the 2016-17 NBA Most Valuable Player<\/a><\/strong>, defeating James Harden and Kawhi Leonard in the voting.<\/p>\n It was the peak of Russell Westbrook.<\/p>\n Westbrook did not stop after his MVP season.<\/p>\n That was perhaps even more remarkable.<\/p>\n He averaged another triple-double<\/a> in 2017-18:<\/p>\n 25.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists.<\/strong><\/p>\n Then he did it again in 2018-19:<\/p>\n 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 10.7 assists.<\/strong><\/p>\n Something that had happened once during the NBA’s first seven decades suddenly appeared almost normal.<\/p>\n Westbrook had changed expectations.<\/p>\n Before his run, Robertson’s season-long triple-double was treated almost like Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game \u2014 an artifact from another statistical universe.<\/p>\n Westbrook brought it into modern basketball.<\/p>\n Oklahoma City attempted to build another contender around Westbrook by acquiring Paul George and Carmelo Anthony in 2017.<\/p>\n The results were disappointing.<\/p>\n The Thunder lost to the Utah Jazz<\/a> in the first round in 2018.<\/p>\n Anthony departed, while George remained and produced an MVP-caliber 2018-19 season.<\/p>\n Still, Oklahoma City again lost in the first round, this time to Portland<\/a>.<\/p>\n Damian Lillard ended the series with his famous long-distance buzzer-beater in Game 5.<\/p>\n It effectively ended the Westbrook era in Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n George was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers<\/a> during the summer of 2019, and Westbrook was sent to Houston.<\/p>\n Westbrook’s departure ended an extraordinary 11-season relationship with the Thunder.<\/p>\n He had grown up with the franchise.<\/p>\n Oklahoma City had watched him transform from an athletic rookie into an All-Star, scoring champion and MVP.<\/p>\n Unlike Durant’s departure, Westbrook’s exit was largely celebrated rather than resented. The franchise was rebuilding, and the trade gave him another opportunity to compete.<\/p>\n For the first time in his NBA career, Russell Westbrook played somewhere other than Oklahoma City.<\/p>\n The Houston Rockets<\/a> acquired Westbrook in exchange for Chris Paul and draft compensation.<\/p>\n It reunited him with Harden.<\/p>\n Houston attempted to redesign its entire offense around the pairing.<\/p>\n Eventually, the Rockets traded center Clint Capela and essentially abandoned the traditional center position. The additional floor spacing opened driving lanes for Westbrook.<\/p>\n Before the COVID-19 shutdown, the experiment produced stretches of outstanding basketball.<\/p>\n Westbrook averaged 27.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists<\/strong> during the 2019-20 season.<\/p>\n But Houston’s extreme small-ball approach struggled in the postseason. The Rockets defeated Oklahoma City in seven games before losing to the eventual champion Lakers in five.<\/p>\n Westbrook’s Houston career lasted one season.<\/p>\n Houston traded Westbrook to the Washington Wizards<\/a> for John Wall before the 2020-21 season.<\/p>\n His lone year in Washington became one of the most underrated portions of his career.<\/p>\n The Wizards began badly, but Westbrook and Bradley Beal eventually dragged the team into the postseason.<\/p>\n Westbrook averaged another triple-double:<\/p>\n 22.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and a league-leading 11.7 assists.<\/strong><\/p>\n It was the fourth season of his career in which he averaged a triple-double.<\/p>\n On May 10, 2021, Westbrook recorded the 182nd triple-double of his career<\/strong>, surpassing Oscar Robertson’s longstanding NBA record.<\/p>\n A record that had survived for decades now belonged to Westbrook.<\/p>\n In 2021, Westbrook returned home to Los Angeles<\/a> when Washington traded him to the Lakers.<\/p>\n On paper, the combination of Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis created a roster filled with star power.<\/p>\n In practice, it was a terrible fit.<\/p>\n Westbrook needed the basketball to maximize his strengths. James was a superior primary creator. Neither provided the type of shooting necessary to complement the other, while the Lakers’ aging roster lacked spacing and defensive consistency.<\/p>\n Westbrook became the face of the team’s problems.<\/p>\n His turnovers, missed jump shots and late-game mistakes were magnified. The Lakers went 33-49 in 2021-22<\/strong> and missed the playoffs entirely.<\/p>\n The following season, new coach Darvin Ham moved Westbrook to the bench.<\/p>\n To Westbrook’s credit, he accepted the change and became a productive reserve.<\/p>\n But the relationship had deteriorated too far.<\/p>\n The Lakers traded him to Utah in February 2023. The Jazz bought out his contract without Westbrook appearing in a game.<\/p>\n Westbrook remained in Los Angeles but switched teams, signing with the Clippers.<\/p>\n The move gave him an opportunity to reset his career.<\/p>\n His statistics were no longer those of an MVP, but Westbrook demonstrated that he could still contribute without dominating every possession.<\/p>\n He reunited with Paul George and later Harden.<\/p>\n For perhaps the first time in his career, Westbrook had to confront the transition from superstar to role player.<\/p>\n It was not always smooth, but he accepted coming off the bench and continued playing with the same energy that had defined his prime.<\/p>\n Westbrook joined the Denver Nuggets<\/a> for the 2024-25 season.<\/p>\n Playing alongside Nikola Jokic required another adjustment.<\/p>\n Westbrook was no longer expected to carry an offense. His job was to provide pace, playmaking, rebounding and energy.<\/p>\n The flaws remained. Defenses could sag away from him because of his inconsistent outside shooting, and his aggressive decision-making could still produce turnovers.<\/p>\n But the qualities that made Westbrook special remained visible as well.<\/p>\n Even in his mid-30s, he played hard.<\/p>\n There was rarely such a thing as a meaningless Russell Westbrook possession.<\/p>\n Westbrook’s final NBA stop came with the Sacramento Kings in 2025-26.<\/p>\n At 37 years old, he remained remarkably productive for a guard whose game had always depended heavily on athleticism.<\/p>\n He appeared in 64 games and averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists<\/strong>, shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 33.8 percent from three-point range.<\/p>\n It was not the Westbrook who once averaged 31.6 points and a triple-double.<\/p>\n It did not need to be.<\/p>\n He had survived long enough to become something few expected during his explosive prime: a veteran role player.<\/p>\n On August 12, 2026, Westbrook announced his retirement after 18 NBA seasons.<\/p>\n Westbrook’s most obvious historical legacy is the triple-double.<\/p>\n He retired with 209<\/strong>, the most in NBA history.<\/p>\n But focusing solely on the total misses the larger impact.<\/p>\n Westbrook changed how basketball viewed the statistical possibilities of the point guard position.<\/p>\n Guards had always rebounded. Guards had always scored. Guards had always accumulated assists.<\/p>\n Almost nobody had combined all three at Westbrook’s volume.<\/p>\n His athletic rebounding allowed Oklahoma City to immediately transition into offense without requiring an outlet pass. Westbrook could collect the rebound himself and accelerate downcourt.<\/p>\n At his peak, that made him a one-man fast break.<\/p>\n No honest retrospective of Westbrook’s career can ignore his weaknesses.<\/p>\n He was never an efficient outside shooter.<\/p>\n He finished his career shooting 30.8 percent from three-point range<\/strong>.<\/p>\n His aggressive passing generated turnovers. His shot selection could become particularly damaging late in games. As his athleticism declined, the limitations of his jump shot became increasingly difficult to hide.<\/p>\n Critics also questioned whether the pursuit of triple-doubles sometimes distorted the way he played.<\/p>\n Those arguments intensified because Westbrook never won an NBA championship.<\/p>\n After reaching the 2012 Finals, he never returned.<\/p>\n Calling Westbrook’s production meaningless stat-padding goes too far.<\/p>\n A player cannot accidentally average a triple-double four times.<\/p>\n Rebounding at his size required extraordinary anticipation and effort. Generating double-digit assists required creating shots for teammates.
