Spurs and Lakers discussing a DeMar DeRozan – Kyle Kuzma swap

After failing to make the playoffs for the first time since 1997, the San Antonio Spurs are looking poised to start a rebuilding project. The Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly discussing a swap of DeMar DeRozan for Kyle Kuzma and Danny Green.

The swap would give the Spurs a young player to help with their rebuild. Kuzma, entering his 4th year in the NBA out of the University of Utah, had his worse season as a pro last year, oftentimes struggling to find his role. The Lakers thought a lot of Kuzma, so much so that they kept him out of the Anthony Davis trade that saw nearly every other Laker asset go to the Pelicans for the big man.

Kuzma’s talent is undeniable though. In 2018-19 he averaged almost 19 points a game. Given the reigns to a team he would likely have a breakout season. Green would be included to help make the salaries match. The Spurs and Green have a long history together, however. Green spent from 2010 until 2018 with the Spurs before he and Kawhi Leonard were sent to Toronto in the deal that brought the Spurs DeRozan.

The World Champion Lakers are looking to boost their roster as they will face stiffer competition in the west. The Warriors look to be a real threat to the Lakers, as do the Nuggets, Clippers, Jazz and Mavericks.

Adding DeRozan may also help the team convince Anthony Davis to re-sign. Davis has publically stated that he wants to return to the Lakers, is expected to field massive offers from other teams including his hometown team of Chicago.
