Atlantic Division Preview

September 27th, 2009

The Atlantic Division has been one of the least competitive divisions the past few years. The last two the division has been dominated by the Boston Celtics, unfortunately for the other four teams it doesn’t look like anything will change this coming season.

Boston Celtics

Two years ago the Boston Celtics were the NBA champions, they looked poised to repeat before Kevin Garnett got injured in late February. The Celtics were able to remain an NBA elite team, but without their heart and soul they struggled in the playoffs. KG is back now and if he can remain healthy this biggest off-season question mark will be removed.

The Celtics added some interesting pieces during the off-season, the biggest being Rasheed Wallace. Wallace is an insurance policy incase Garnett cannot go full speed all season long. They also added Sheldon Williams and Marquis Daniels to boost their bench.

Expect another stellar year for the Boston Celtics. They will battle with the Cavs and Magic for the best record in the NBA this season and could win themselves their 18th all-time NBA championship.

Toronto Raptors

The Raptors had a hugely disappointing season last year after making the playoffs the two previous seasons. Injuries played a part in the Raptors struggles with various players out at different times of the year. But the Raptors biggest struggles seem to be adjusting to new teammates after the Jermaine O’Neal trade than trading O’Neal for Shawn Marion.

The Raptors had one of the best off-seasons this year. They added one of the top free agents in Hedo Turkoglu, but also added Marco Bellinelli, Reggie Evans, Jarrett Jack, Amir Johnson, and brought back Rasho Nesterovic. Besides Hedo, expect the biggest impacts to be made by Bellinelli and Nesterovic. Bellinelli will give the Raptors the outside shooting they lost when they traded Jason Kapono to Philadelphia for Reggie Evans. Nesterovic will give the Raptors the much needed inside defense.

Toronto made the right moves and now have a really good team. I don’t think they are as good as Boston but I do think they are good enough to challenge for a home court in a first round playoff series. Bosh, Bargnani, Turkoglu and Calderon is a very nice core to build around and now they have a lot of depth as well.

Philadelphia 76ers

The Sixers were a playoff team and gave the Orlando Magic some great finishes in the first round last year, but they lost a lot of core players and didn’t improve much in the off-season. The loss of Andre Miller is really going to hurt the Sixers this season. Louis Williams is a solid player but not a guy who can lead a team in the playoffs in the NBA.

The big off-season addition by the Sixers is Jason Kapono; who is a solid player but isn’t going to help very much. The Sixers are most likely betting on their 2008 off-season acquisition Elton Brand to become a major factor this year. Brand missed most of the season with an injury.

If the Sixers can stay healthy they could be in the playoffs, but as a lower seed. They need Brand and Iguodala to stay healthy to have any chance. I still think their lack of depth will ultimately spell doom for the Sixers.

New Jersey Nets

The Nets had a rebuilding year last year and they look to be continuing with that course of action this year by trading Vince Carter. The Nets had some promising players last year such as Brooke Lopez and this year they will likely continue trying to develop him.

The Nets didn’t add much during the off-season. They did add Rafer Alston and Courtney Lee but neither guy are game changers and are more suited to be role players. The Nets will be going with Lopez as their number one option.

New York Knicks

The Knicks continue to be a mess much like they have been the past seven years. The Knicks are banking on a signing Lebron James or Dwayne Wade in 2010 so they are saving every bit of cap room they can.

The Knicks were able to re-sign their best players David Lee and Nate Robinson which will help them be a little bit better than they would have been otherwise. But the Knicks have nothing and don’t really seem to care. They want to shed more cap space and will try to move Eddy Curry for an expiring.

Expect another horrid season of Knicks basketball.

Predicted Records

Boston 60-22
Toronto 50-32
Philadelphia 41-41
New Jersey 31-51
New York 20-62

Southeast Division Preview

September 19th, 2009

The Southeastern division has been one of the NBA’s most lopsided divisions in recent years, despite having several different winners. The division crown race is rarely tight come December and one team tends to dominate. This year however, things are looking a bit different as all five teams could compete for the divisional crown.

Ranking the teams from best to worst in the division, here is the first of six division rankings.

Orlando Magic.

The defending Eastern champions and division champions should easily repeat a top the Southeast. They have the best big man in the game in Dwight Howard and got better over the summer by adding Vince Carter. The loss of Hedo Turkoglu will hurt them, but they added enough smaller pieces to help with his absence.

Besides Carter, I think their most important addition is Ryan Anderson. He looked very good at times with the Nets and could be a solid sixth man for them. If the Magic really wanted to they could move Lewis to the three, Carter to the two and start Anderson at the four. The Magic were one of the most active teams in the off-season adding Carter, Anderson, Matt Barnes, Brandon Bass, Jason Williams and Morris Almond. These additions give the Magic depth that not a lot of teams have, and depth that will allow them to remain afloat while Rashard Lewis serves a 10 game suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy.

The one key to Orlando’s success will be Dwight Howard. He needs to remain one of the games premier defenders and still average around 20 points a game. This should not be any trouble for Howard as he’s lead the NBA in blocks the past season. If Howard can average 22 or more points a game, lead the NBA in blocks and rebounds, like he did last season, and Orlando has a top two record in the East than Howard could potentially be the leagues MVP.

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks didn’t make many waves this off-season but they did get better. They got lucky in the draft and snagged Jeff Teague and added veteran big man Jason Collins. Most importantly they didn’t lose much in free agency, they were able to keep their top free agent Mike Bibby. The Hawks also were able to make a trade with the Warriors to acquire Jamal Crawford.

Though the Hawks do lack depth. Outside their starting five (Bibby, Johnson,, Smith, Horford, Puchilia) they do not have many top notched players. Their only real good sub last year was Marvin Williams. This year however they have added Crawford and Teague who should really bolster their depth. They still lack size overall though. Collin’s is their only seven footer and of their five guys over 6’10” one is more of a small forward(Smith), and one never plays(Randolph) .

The key to Atlanta’s success is going to be weather or not they can continue to improve. By this I mean each of the past few years their young core of players have gotten better as they matured from young college kids to NBA veterans. If this rate of improvement continues the Hawks will be just fine, if not they could have some problems.

Washington Wizards.

The Wizards had a terrible year last season due to injuries, now they are healthy are they should at least contend for a playoff spot. Other than a draft day trade the Wizards did very little. On Draft day they moved the #5 pick, which became Ricky Rubio, to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Mike Miller and Randy Foye. This deal not only gave the Wizards some depth, but it helped them move a bad contract.

The other important addition Washington made was Fabrico Oberto. Oberto was waived by the Bucks after they acquired him from the Spurs, and the Wizards signed Oberto soon after. He will replace Ethan Thomas in their rotation and should be a solid sixth man for them.

The key for Washington is staying healthy. Gilbert Arenas missed all of last year and they need him if they are to compete. If Agent Zero can get back to his former self the Wizards could stand as a big obstacle for the Magic a top the division.

Miami Heat

Unlike their divisional rivals, who made headline moves, Miami’s big off-season acquisition this year; Quentin Richardson. Basically, Miami did nothing this off-season. Some of this may be due to their attempts to acquire Carlos Boozer from Utah.

The lack of moves is going to hurt the Heat as last year they were out powered and out matched in most games. O’Neal is a year old and looks and plays a lot older than he actually is, and Michael Beasley has had off the court issues. The one good thing for Miami is Dwayne Wade.

I do not think Miami is done making deals, and I think ultimately they will work out a deal to get Carlos Boozer or another top level player. They want to show Wade they are serious about winning so he re-signs this summer.

The key for Miami is going to be Wade. They need to keep him happy and keep him health. If they fail to do either it could be a long season for the Miami Heat.

Charlotte Bobcats

Slowly but surely they keep getting better. They were almost 500 last year and will try to get their this season. The Bobcats acquire Tyson Chandler to try and become a more defensive minded team. Adding Chandler to a team with Wallace and Bell is a good move in that direction.

Raymond Felton remains a free agent for the Bobcats and they are going to need to re-sign him. He’s one of their better players and a solid play maker. Though, if they are unable to sign him than DJ Augustine will have to shelter the load. I think Felton fits this defensive mindedness that the Cats are going to better than Augustine but they will have to make due with whom ever they have.

The key for the Bobcats will be to win games they are suppose to win. Last year this was a problem for them, they’d let their guard down against the dogs of the NBA and this cost them a few games.

Record predictions.
Orlando 64-18
Atlanta 50-32
Washington 48-34
Miami 38-44
Charlotte 35-47

Boozer to New York?

September 17th, 2009

Rich Bucher is reporting that the Jazz and Knicks are discussing a trade that would send Carlos Boozer to the Knicks for David Lee.    My source, who is usually fairly accurate, has confirmed this and says that the Jazz and Knicks have had several discussions about such a scenario all summer long.    The Jazz like David Lee a lot, they feel he’d be a perfect fit for their team, the problem is the Jazz do not want to trade with the New York Knicks because the Knicks owe the Jazz an unprotected lottery pick next year, so adding Carlos Boozer could hurt the Jazz in the 2010 draft.   Utah also wants expiring contracts and draft picks if they trade Boozer.   The Knicks have plenty of expiring contracts, but it’s the draft picks they don’t have.

From my source I have gotten a few scenario’s which have been discussed.   The most unlikely is the Knicks re-sign and than trade both David Lee and Nate Robinson to the Jazz for Boozer.    That is a deal that the Jazz would likely go for, they do not really need Robinson but acquiring him would really weaken the Knicks already pathetic roster.     A more likely scenario is a package of Lee and either Al Harrington or Larry Hughes for Boozer.    In that deal the Jazz would get value for Boozer in Lee, but also get an expiring.

One gamble the Knicks could take is also trying to acquire Andrei Kirilenko in the deal.  Kirilenko has a brutal contract that the Jazz have been looking to get out from, and cap relief in 2010 may make it worth Utah’s while to do a trade.  Something such as Lee, Harrington and Hughes for Boozer,  Kirilenko and Morris Almond or Kyrylo Fesenko.   The Knicks all but end their chance of signing two marquee free agents in 2010, but they do have a much better and more attractive team to lure one, and they would have the Bird rights to Carlos Boozer; meaning they could sign him even while over the cap.   Dwayne Wade, Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko, Nate Robinson, and Jordan Hill does not look like that bad of a team.    The deal at the same time improves Utah.  Okur, Millsap, Harrington, Brewer Williams with Lee off the bench would be a formidible foe for any of the western elites.

The latest from my source says that the teams discussed a four way deal with the Sixers and Suns were the Jazz would recieve Lee, filler, 2 first round picks and cap relief while the Knicks got Boozer and the other two exchanged some spare parts with each other.    One problem with this is that the Sixers would want Jazz center Kosta Koufos in the deal and the Jazz are not willing to part with the young project yet.    The Jazz were hoping that Fesenko and the rights to Ante Tomic would appease them but apparently it hasn’t.

Most noteables to the Most underated

Yes, as you can see the enjoyable, factual and somewhat intruiging magazine “This Week in the Nba” is back and getting prepped for the new season, which, in case you didnt already know, is little over a month away. What that also means is that its time to have a look over the free agent mayhem and trading chaos we’ve seen in the big chunk of the offseason thats just passed us by.

First, let me give you an insight into the new features and things you’ll be seeing from these articles over the coming year:

- New logo/title
Yup, as you can see at the top of the page, “This Week in the Nba” has its own title and logo, designed to keep it lively and in touch with its counterparts of the article and blogging world. Plus, as you can see, the title of the article is also now listed as part of the logo.

- Video inclusion
Providing a new look and different perspective on the concept of blogging. Every now and then i’ll post videos outlining the point i’m making, and simply for your amusement, so stay tuned for that.

- Regular team updates, breaking it down division by division
At the start of every month I will be looking at each team, breaking it down into each division so you can track your team’s progress and see if theres any news or developments you havent heard of.

- Its Competetion time!
Yes, for the first time nbaboards will have its own competition!. Each week i’ll ask a question in this special segmant about the weeks action, or anything related to the game, and the person who provides me with the best or right anwser will have their reputation increased and their name placed into my list of “weekly winners”. At the end of the season, the person with the most “wins” will be given a reward, courtesy of me. (Details to come, but readers must PM me their answers).

Excited?.. I sure know I am. But now its time to get on with the real stuff. And where best two start but with the offseasons most noteables and most underated. What I mean by this is the offseason moves (draft and trades included) that I think have warranted the status of being the most noteable and the most underated of the offseason so far. And bear in mind the ratings of these I’ll leave to your to grade yourselves, feel free to comment on what you think are the best and worst. So lets get right to it;

Most Noteables:

One Month to go.

September 2nd, 2009

Only one month until the start of the NBA season.   It’s been a long hot and somewhat boring summer.  There were a few eventful moments but generally it was a fairly lame off-season.   It was especially lame for me because of the cancellation of the Rocky Mountain Revue.  The Revue has been a staple of my summers every year since the mid 1990s, and it’s been a good holdover for me until the pre-season.

I was also expecting a lot of movement this year, but with the exception of the draft there wasn’t a lot going on.   The Bucks made a lot of small trades, but none of them are Earthshattering.

August is traditionally the most boring month of the NBA season.   Team executives go on vacations and transactions stagnate.   Things will pick up in early to mid-September when there will be a free agent frenzy before training camp.

October 1st is the first preseason game.

Tim James

August 31st, 2009

Recently it was reported that former NBA player Tim James was stationed in Iraq.   Personally I like hearing this, it’s good to hear a positive story of a former NBA player.  All to often we hear about former NBA players getting into trouble and not doing something to turn their lives around.

Other players like former first round pick Kirk Snyder have gotten themselves in a lot of legal trouble.  Snyder broke into a neighbors house, robbed and beat them.    But this story is just a feel good story that not all former NBA players who could not make it have wasted their lives.    While being in Iraq is not the safest thing a man could do, it does give him more of a future than facing a ten year prison sentence and it will give him money preventing him for needed to rob people.

I vaguely remember Tim James as a player.   I remember him playing for the Hornets as a scrub.  I looked it up and he played 43 games  over three years with the Heat, Hornets, and Sixers.
